On 25 june 2024, the european council further extended the temporary protection directive (tpd) for the protection of individuals fleeing the ukraine crisis until 4 march 2026. The european commission has estimated that demand for natural gas in the eu declined by 18% between august 2022 and march 2024, exceeding the 15% reduction target set after russia’s invasion of ukraine.
With a new sense of urgency, eu leaders reiterated their steadfast support for ukraine, calling on the council to rapidly adopt an eighth support package for ukraine. Federal chancellor scholz welcomed the move, describing it as “a good decision” and a “promising sign”.
